Where ancient civilisations meet vibrant cultures

North Africa is a captivating region of ancient history, desert landscapes, and bustling cities. From the timeless pyramids of Egypt to the colourful markets and souks of Morocco and Tunisia, North Africa is filled with architectural marvels and cultural treasures. Known for its vast stretches of the Sahara Desert, the region is also home to beautiful Mediterranean coastlines, blending Arab, Berber, and Mediterranean influences in its architecture, cuisine, and traditions.
Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt are well established tourist destinations but you can go beyond the obvious and visit places such as Djerba Island (Tunisia) and Fes (Morocco), which are very interesting. Algeria is a fascinating country to catch and great on site once you get into it and, to a lesser extent, Mauritania – although don’t be fooled by the iron ore train craze. It is not a simple country to catch! Libya remains uncatchable sadly at the moment.
🇩🇿 Algeria – The biggest country in Africa boasts Vast Saharan landscapes with Roman ruins and a Mediterranean coastline rich in history and culture.
Visas are expensive and have to be procured in person at the embassy. Very much a cash society, with money exchange on the black market. £1 can be anything from 17-30 Dinar. No booze other than in hotels. Conservative society. Constantine well worth a visit and can be done just about on a day trip from Algiers. See more on Algeria here
🇪🇬 Egypt – Ancient wonders, the timeless Nile, and world-class Red Sea beaches in one iconic destination.
Beaches are for package holidays. Cairo packed but close to the main sites. Cruise down the Nile seems better than it is. Mixed society with French and English both well spoken. See more on Egypt here
🇱🇾 Libya – Extraordinary Roman ruins, vast desert landscapes and a long Mediterranean coastline define this country.
Possibly the hardest and most expensive visa in the world to acquire. Currently not a catchable country due to safety concerns.
🇲🇷 Mauritania – Endless desert landscapes, ancient trading towns and vast open horizons define this Saharan nation.
Very conservative country. Very little if any booze at all. Bring plenty of mosquito spray and a big wrap around for desert winds. The train craze to Zouerat very difficult and only for the extreme!
🇲🇦 Morocco – The leading destination for tourism in Africa, Morocco is famed for its vibrant souks, ancient cities like Marrakesh and Fez, and stunning landscapes.
Marrakesh exceptionally touristy. Fes much more authentic and rustic. Tangiers a good option even on a day trip from Spain. Excellent scenery in the Atlas Mountains. Ignore the street hawkers. Beware animal bites or licks as can be very toxic. See more on Morocco here
🇹🇳 Tunisia – Tunisia is known for its Mediterranean beaches, ancient ruins, and Sahara landscapes.
Go to Carthage for Roman ruins. Djerba island a delight if you can get there. Very tourist friendly but also a lot of upselling to tourists. Easy to hire a taxi to take you to places as country so small.
