West Africa is a vibrant region of colour, music, culture, and history. From the palm-fringed beaches of Ghana and Senegal to the bustling markets of Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, this region offers country catchers an energetic and authentic experience. Rich in tradition and known for its warmth and hospitality, West Africa combines colonial history, lively cities, fascinating tribal cultures, and stunning coastlines. It is one of the most culturally immersive regions in Africa and often surprises first-time catchers.

Ghana is widely regarded as the easiest and most welcoming introduction to West Africa, while Senegal offers a relaxed and friendly Francophone experience. The Gambia can easily be combined with Senegal and is one of Africa’s easiest catches. For more adventurous catchers, countries such as Togo and Benin offer rewarding and authentic experiences. Nigeria is fascinating but intense, and some areas across the region can be unpredictable, so planning is important.

🇧🇯 Benin – The birthplace of Vodou, Benin is rich in cultural heritage, with fascinating historical sites like the Royal Palaces of Abomey.
Hand2 Nice coastal region. Calm and generally safe. Very big mosquitoes. Vodou areas are everywhere

🇧🇫 Burkina Faso – A creative and cultural hub celebrated for festivals, crafts, and authentic village life.
Hand2 Currently uncatchable and unstable. Ouagadougou bustling and big city. Rural areas very poor

🇨🇻 Cabo Verde – A relaxed island nation blending Afro-Portuguese culture, music, beaches, and volcanic landscapes.
Hand2 Try island hopping to avoid the package holidays. Don’t go all inclusive

🇨🇲 Cameroon – Called “Africa in miniature” for its diversity, Cameroon has it all: beaches, mountains, rainforests, and savannas.
Hand2 Mount Cameroon can be a highlight. Roads are terrible from north to south so add time to your itinerary. Yaounde and Doula are both big but can be dangerous. Both English and French widely spoken.

🇬🇲 Gambia – Known as “the smiling coast of Africa,” it offers diverse birdlife and relaxed coastal towns like Banjul and Serrekunda.
Hand2 Easily catchable from Senegal. Good flight access. Dont go all inclusive to discover the areas

🇬🇭 Ghana – Often known as the gateway to West Africa for its friendly atmosphere and stable environment. There are many sites and traditions to enjoy, such as the bustling market in Kumasi, nestled within the Ashanti Region.
Hand2 Go to Big Millys in Krokobite Beach- an institution and 1 hour from Accra! Kumasi market is one of the most impressive in West Africa . Mole Mole national park well worth a visit – stay in the huts in the park. (Rich)
Hand2 Every time I go back, the thing that stands out is how much people miss by staying in Accra. My family’s Ashanti on my mum’s side, from Kumawu, and Ghana feels like several different countries depending on where you go. Get to Kumasi for the Ashanti Kingdom’s living royal culture, then out to Bonwire to watch kente cloth woven by hand, still done the way it always has been. If you’ve got time, push north to Tamale and Bolgatanga, totally different climate and pace, incredible women-led shea and textile cooperatives most visitors never see. And learn to say “Akwaaba” properly, Ghanaians will fold you into the family within a day if you show up with real warmth. (Julian) See more on Ghana here

🇬🇳 Guinea – The country has diverse landscapes, from coastal mangroves to lush forests.
Hand2 Conakry is bustling fun. Try the Îles de Los for some cool island hopping.

🇬🇼 Guinea-Bissau – This small country is best known for the stunning Bijagós Archipelago, with its remote islands, diverse wildlife, and preserved cultural traditions.
Hand2 Portuguese speaking. Politically unstable. Orango island noteable for its hippos.

🇨🇮 Côte d’Ivoire – Ivory Coast is known for its bustling cities, tropical beaches, and national parks.
Hand2 Go to Yamoussoukro to visit the biggest church/cathedral in Africa. Check to see if the crocodiles are still in the moat outside. Discover Tai National Park, a real delight!

🇱🇷 Liberia – Liberia is known for its pristine beaches, surf spots, and the Sapo National Park rainforest.
Hand2 Interesting US influence. Not colonised. English widely spoken.

🇲🇱 Mali – Mali is known for its rich history and UNESCO World Heritage sites, like Timbuktu and the mud mosque of Djenné.
Hand2 Currently uncatchable. Djenne and Dogon country fascinating. If going overland, enjoy the bar at the border from the dry country of Mauritania!

🇳🇬 Nigeria – Africa’s most populous destination is full of life at every corner. Nigeria is known for its vibrant culture, bustling cities, and music scene.
Hand2 Lagos needs planning and time! Kano in the north is fascinating and can be enjoyed by motorbike. Anyone will give you a lift! Get out of the cities to experience the most friendly people and fascinating places. Money exchange readily available on the black market.

🇸🇹 Sao Tome e Principe – A remote island escape of rainforest covered mountains, quiet beaches and rich Portuguese influenced culture.
Hand2 Portuguese speaking. Interesting mix between beach and city. Very poor.

🇸🇳 Senegal – Known for its lively music, historical sites, and coastal beauty, Senegal is a cultural hub in West Africa.
Hand2 Best music in West Africa. Go both north and south. Enjoy Gambia in the middle!

🇹🇬 Togo – A compact country offering coastal life, forested hills and vibrant markets full of colour and craft.
Hand2 Very friendly People. Lake Togo is interesting. Much can be done on day trips from Lome. Easy access to Ghana and Benin but will need multi entry visas.
