Wildlife, Adventure, and Natural Beauty

East Africa is one of Africa’s most iconic and rewarding regions, known for its wildlife, lakes, mountains, and unforgettable landscapes. From the plains of Kenya and Tanzania to the mountain gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda, East Africa offers some of the continent’s greatest travel experiences. The region is also home to the source of the Nile, the beaches of the Indian Ocean, and fascinating cultures and traditions.
Kenya and Tanzania are the classic safari catches and are well established on the tourist trail. Uganda is a brilliant country to catch with adventure, nature and city life all in one. Rwanda is clean, organised and easy to navigate, while Ethiopia offers unique history and culture unlike anywhere else in Africa. Somalia and South Sudan remain very challenging, while Sudan and Eritrea require more preparation and flexibility.
🇧🇮 Burundi – Lush hills, Lake Tanganyika, and powerful drumming traditions offer a deeply rooted cultural experience.
Tiny country so possible to twin with Rwanda if border is open. Dont go too far West with DRC border.
🇩🇯 Djibouti – Rarely travelled to small country with volcanic landscapes and serene beaches.
Very hard to catch. Poor access. Tightly controlled.
🇪🇷 Eritrea – A closed and challenging country, the highland capital, Asmara, is famed for its unique Art Deco buildings, giving it a distinct and fascinating charm.
Highly autocratic. Hard visas. Stunning beaches if you get there!
🇪🇹 Ethiopia – Ethiopia is rich in history and is known for ancient cities like Lalibela and Aksum, as well as the Simien Mountains.
Addis being reconstructed at the moment so choose where you stay wisely. Very conservative society. Churches will pray loudly throughout every Saturday night and festivals. Gondar region lawless. Merkato chaotic but can be done on your own without guide. Excellent access via Ethiopian airlines. See more on Ethiopia here
🇰🇪 Kenya – Iconic safaris, vibrant cities, and Indian Ocean beaches create a classic African experience. Kenya is renowned for its world-famous safaris.
Go to Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi for an amazing meat feast. Pick your parks wisely such as Tsavo as Massai Mara NP can be overrun. Eldoret for running! Mombasa remains a beach highlight.
🇲🇼 Malawi – Known as the “Warm Heart of Africa,” Malawi is best known for Lake Malawi, one of Africa’s largest lakes with crystal-clear waters and vibrant fish life.
Take time to relax at the lake. Generally safe to swim there. Easy access from neighbouring countries.
🇷🇼 Rwanda – Rwanda is celebrated for its conservation success, particularly in Volcanoes National Park, where visitors can trek to see mountain gorillas
Kigali very interesting in its own right with sad recent history. Avoid the Western border region. Gorilla tours are possible but very expensive.
🇸🇨 Seychelles – A tropical paradise, famous for its idyllic beaches, crystal-clear waters, and coral reefs.
Stunning island country. Go there to relax. Not cheap.
🇸🇴 Somalia – A long Indian Ocean coastline, strong local culture and a deep trading history define the country. Travel remains very difficult due to ongoing security issues.
Almost all uncatchable at the moment, other than Somaliland. Hargeisa technically catchable for the real explorers.
🇸🇸 South Sudan – One of the worlds newest countries with vast wetlands, wildlife and traditional pastoral cultures.
Uncatchable at the moment sadly.
🇸🇩 Sudan – Home to more pyramids than Egypt, rich Nubian history and striking desert landscapes along the Nile.
Khartoum and neighbouring areas has been catchable recently. But access, visa and safety varies daily so take care.
🇹🇿 Tanzania – Famed for Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and Zanzibar’s beaches. The country offers exceptional wildlife experiences and beautiful coastal destinations.
Camp in the Serengeti if you can and explore it the authentic way. Go to Kilimanjaro region even if not climbing. Stay in Stone town for at least 2-3 days in Zanzibar. Arusha is an entry point for the parks but don’t stay there as it offers little. See more on Tanzania here
🇺🇬 Uganda – Known as the “Pearl of Africa” and is home to diverse landscapes and the endangered mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Entry normally via Entebbe or overland. Murchison Falls are relaxing and worth the visit. Avoid Western border regions. Rafting from Jinja down the Nile is awesome. Kampala most relaxed and enjoyable cities in East Africa. Casinos are good but take care with the cranes!
