Japan

Japan is a country where ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity exist side by side, combining historic temples, tranquil gardens and traditional villages with futuristic cities and technological innovation. From snow-capped mountains and volcanic landscapes to subtropical islands and world-renowned cuisine, Japan offers an extraordinary variety of experiences across its regions.

  • Japan’s extensive rail network makes travelling between major cities exceptionally convenient, with high-speed Shinkansen trains covering much of the country.
  • Japan has four distinct seasons, with significant differences in climate between the northern island of Hokkaido and the subtropical islands of Okinawa.
  • Many Japanese customs emphasise respect and consideration for others, so observe local etiquette when visiting temples, using public transport and dining.
  • Japan’s cities can be surprisingly compact and easy to explore on foot, while excellent public transport makes a car unnecessary for most major tourist destinations.
