Summary of Millie’s trip
Swim in every lake, hike every peak, and take advantage of this small and beautiful country. Slovenia rewards those who slow down and get outside.
Country Visited
Slovenia
General Tips for Slovenia
- Rent a car with a roof tent, such as through Balkan Campers, as it doubles as your transport and accommodation and is easy and affordable to book.
- Wild camping is illegal in Slovenia, so book campsites in advance.
- Summer is a great time to go.
- It’s pretty cheap once you’re there.
- Definitely worth going back.
Destinations and Tips
Ljubljana
- Spend one day in Ljubljana enjoying local food, a boat trip, and just relaxing with a drink and an ice cream.
- Try the Slovenian stuffed dumplings at Moji Štruklji Slovenije.
- Grab a focaccia sandwich at Dobra Vila.
- Look out for the local wine bars serving Slovenian wine.
Lake Bled
- Only spend one night here, as Lake Bled can easily be done in a day.
- It’s beautiful but seriously overhyped, and can get busy with big group trips.
- Walk around the lake, stop for a swim and an ice cream, then climb up to the viewpoint.
Triglav National Park & Soca Valley
- Stay around Triglav National Park to be close to the best hiking and swimming.
- Hike Triglav, the country’s highest peak, ideally with a guide who can time the route around the weather and set a manageable pace.
- Consider staying in the mountain hut near the summit for sunrise views, even though it’s fairly basic.
- Spend a full day at the Soca Valley’s fairy pools, swimming and jumping in.
- Swim in every lake you pass along the way.
- Try horse riding at Posestvo Blata near Žaga.
Lake Bohinj
- Don’t skip Lake Bohinj just because it’s further away as it ended up being one of the best parts of the trip.
- Hike the Seven Lakes Walk.
- Spend a final day relaxing by the lake, swimming and reading.
