Mongolia

Mongolia is a fascinating country right in the heart of Central Asia with good access from the rest of Asia and Russia. A nomadic and quiet people now slowly welcoming more tourists. The main allure is the Gobi Desert, where you can experience a completely different lifestyle. The capital Ulaanbaatar is also developing at pace. It is safe and excellent value for a short stay.

  • Flights direct from Russia, Beijing, HK and various other countries in Asia.
  • Very different way of life with a large nomadic culture.
  • Big Korean influence so all of their convenience stores are Korean with many bbqs and karaoke places.
  • Most young people can speak English, especially in the capital.
  • You can pay by card everywhere and the internet functions normally in the city but non existent in the desert!
  • Very affordable and good value.
  • Mongolia is also accessible via the legendary trans-Siberian rail journey from Russia. If you have the time and relevant approvals, this is a truly iconic way to view the country.

Ulaanbaatar

  • Very safe and you can go out at night and all the time.
  • Visiting the Genghis Khan statue is one of the most iconic attractions in the city.
  • Airbnbs are really nice, very clean and well maintained. Much better than small hotels and very good value (Katie.)
  • Traffic can be terrible. A journey to and from the airport can take you upto 3 hours. No ubers so you have to book a driver in advance. Bus is possible but not very reliable.

Gobi Desert

  • Highly reccomended you do this on a tour which can be booked online in advance.
  • 4 days and 3 nights is a good amount of time but you are completely off grid so no phones. They take you back afterwards into the city.
  • Food and accommodation is included and you stay on the first night in a yurt/ger. This is in a campsite where there are showers. Other nights are within a homestay so less predictable.
  • If you are vegetarian, bring some of your own food as the food is mainly mutton with few alternatives (Ethan.)
