USA

The USA is a country of extraordinary scale and diversity, where towering mountain ranges, vast deserts, endless forests and dramatic coastlines stretch across an entire continent. From world-famous cities, such as New York, San Francisco and Miami to iconic national parks, including Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon each one of the fifty states offers something unique, blending breathtaking natural beauty with a rich cultural heritage and countless unforgettable experiences.

  • Prices shown in shops and restaurants usually exclude sales tax, which is added at the checkout and varies by state, so anticipate paying slightly more than the price advertised.
  • Distances are often much greater than they appear. Driving between major attractions can easily take several hours, so check travel times rather than relying solely on the map alone.
  • Public transport is excellent in major cities like New York, Boston and Chicago, but outside major urban areas you’ll often need a car to explore properly.
  • Tipping is expected in restaurants, bars and many service industries, with 15-20% generally considered the standard for good service.

New York City

  • New York is larger than first-time visitors expect. Walking is often the quickest way to explore Manhattan, perhaps the most intriguing of the five boroughs, but comfortable shoes are essential.
  • The subway runs 24 hours a day and is usually the fastest way to travel. Traffic can be extremely heavy, particularly during rush hour.
  • Popular attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Broadway shows should be booked well in advance.
  • Every neighbourhood has its own character, so venture beyond Times Square to places like Greenwich Village, SoHo for a more local experience.

Los Angeles

  • Distances are deceptive. Although attractions may appear close on a map, traffic can turn a short journey into well over an hour.
  • Hiring a car is often the easiest way to explore the city, though parking charges can add up quickly.
  • Beaches such as Santa Monica and Venice offer a completely different atmosphere from Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles.
  • Temperatures can vary noticeably between coast and inland areas, so check the forecast before setting out.

Chicago

  • Chicago’s architecture is one of its greatest attractions. An architecture river cruise is one of the best ways to experience the city’s skyline.
  • The ‘L’ train network provides an easy and affordable way to reach most major attractions without needing a car.
  • Lake Michigan is so vast that it resembles the sea, with beaches and waterfront parks stretching for miles.
  • Winters can be extremely cold and windy, so pack accordingly if visiting between November and March.

Miami

  • South Beach is famous for its Art Deco architecture, nightlife and white-sand beaches, but neighbourhoods such as Little Havana offer a completely different cultural experience.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common during the summer months, although they usually pass quickly.
  • Driving is straightforward, but parking near the beach can be expensive and difficult to find.
  • Miami is an excellent base for visiting Everglades National Park or taking day trips to the Florida Keys.
