Continental scale, cultural power, modern travel

North America’s mainland is a region of huge scale, variety, and contrast. From the modern cities of the United States to Canada’s vast wilderness and Mexico’s rich culture, this is one of the easiest regions to travel in, but also one of the most diverse in experience.
The United States offers endless city and road trip catches, Canada is all about space, nature and clean cities, while Mexico combines culture, food and coastline in a way few countries can match. All three are straightforward to access, well connected, and ideal for flexible country catching.
🇨🇦 Canada – Offers huge open spaces, mountain scenery, and relaxed modern cities. Wildlife, lakes, and national parks sit alongside places like Vancouver and Montreal.
Vast parks and landscapes to explore. Rockies are world renowned. Go in the summer months unless you want to ski in Whistler and other areas. Drive coast to coast if you have the time and resources. Camping in the parks are sensational but take advice. Vancouver is a beautiful city and can be twinned with Seattle or a cruise to Alaska. Try to catch Montreal or Quebec City to experience the French side to Canada. Very good direct flights with Air Transat often being especially good value. St John’s and Newfoundland are a real must to see. Direct flights from London during the summer. Great climate, so much to do and very reasonable prices on the ground. See more on Canada here
🇲🇽 Mexico – Combines ancient civilisations, vibrant modern culture, and warm coastal resorts. Colourful cities, historic ruins, and some of the best food in the world make it endlessly rewarding.
Cancun is world famous and heavily developed with the El Rey ruins not far away. Mexico DF is a massive city but well served by the Metro and with the abundant verdant Chapultepec park a delight which also includes its own castle. Try to catch the Frida Kahlo exhibits in Casa Azul which is a little hard to get to but worth the visit. Can get very busy though. Food and drink is exceptional in most places and street food often better than the posh restaurants. There are many beaches. Baja California is an interesting area to visit once you get past Tijuana. Easy from LA. See more in Mexico here
🇵🇷 Puerto Rico – Blends Caribbean warmth with American infrastructure and Spanish heritage.
Beaches and music dominate. Incredible bays where you can snorkel or kayak for sensational views, such as Mosquito Bay or Laguna Grande. The old Town is San Juan is where much of the history can be viewed. Live music is plentiful as well as festivals, such as the Spirit of the Sun and the International Jazz. Rent a car if going outside San Juan. Many direct flights from the USA.
🇺🇸 USA – Delivers more diversity than almost any other country. From mega cities to deserts, forests, mountains, and coastlines, it offers every style of travel imaginable.
Exceptional well known cities such as NYC and LA as well as tertiary cities that are really popular now such as Austin, Phoenix and Charlotte. Esta generally needed for all before travelling and it is recommended to also download the entry app MPC (Mobile Passport Control) to skip the immigration queues on arrival. Tipping is a major deal and expected everywhere. The rural areas and National Parks are incredible including the likes of Yosemite in the West and the Blue Ridge Parkway (NC) and the Everglades (Florida) in the East. Alaska and Hawaii are destinations in their own right. Amtrak travel is generally good and easy. The flight network is immense but can be expensive if left late. Most historical places to catch are Philadelphia, Washington DC and areas of Manhattan. There are numerous sporting and musical events all year round but weather can vary a lot from state to sate and within seasons. Beware hurricanes in the South East for example. A page on each state awaits! See more on USA here
New York City. Try taking the local commuter ferries to Brooklyn or New Jersey. They provide good views and are much cheaper than the tourist boats! (Anthony)
