Switzerland
General Tips for Switzerland
- Trains are really easy and you don’t need to book in advance.
- The swiss pass includes free access to many museums as well.
- Schweizer Deutsch is very different to normal German and very hard to understand!
- Liechtenstein is an easy day trip from Zurich.
- Everywhere accepts card but some smaller places won’t accept card under 10 CHF so carry some cash for these instances.
- There is so much natural beauty within easy reach of the cities.
- Try to plan and normally whatever you do is worth the effort.
Destinations and Tips
Lausanne
- Olympic museum is worth the visit and about 20 minute walk from the station.
- The lake is stunning and good for running.
- It can be very steep going back into town from the lake.
- Try out the amazing bar in the station – the best we found!
Bern
- There are actual bears in the city centre you can view.
- Everything revolves around the Ztyglogge – the clock tower.
- Trams are excellent but there is quite a lot of work going on.
- Some people swim in the river which is great but be wary of the currents.
Interlaken
- Stunning with two lakes – hence the name.
- Very peaceful around Brienz Lake but you need a bus to get there from the train station.
- Not overcrowded and excellent walking opportunities throughout.
Zurich
- Can be expensive and difficult to find much under 30CHF.
- Staying a bit of town is good value generally with more space, eg.
- Crowne Plaza.
- Try out the mini beach in the city centre.
- FIFA museum is really good and also in the city centre.
